As a family photographer based in the Raleigh area, I’m always on the lookout for beautiful outdoor locations that offer the perfect backdrop for capturing natural, genuine family moments. Whether you’re looking for wide-open fields, lush greenery, or classic Southern charm, Raleigh and the surrounding areas are packed with stunning spots for family portraits. Here are some of my favorite go-to locations that never disappoint–
This larger, well-known park has a lot to offer—beautiful greenery, open fields with tall grass, and lots of mature trees.

If you love color and variety, JC Raulston Arboretum is a dream. With its curated gardens, blooming flowers (especially in spring and summer), and peaceful walking paths, it’s ideal for families who want a touch of nature with a little polish. The arboretum has gorgeous light throughout the day and offers a mix of open and shaded areas, which is perfect for little ones who may need breaks in between shots.
Best time to shoot: Spring and fall

Dix Park has quickly become one of the most popular photo spots in Raleigh, and for good reason. The open fields, views of the downtown skyline, and rows of iconic oak trees offer so many creative possibilities. During late summer, the sunflower field is absolutely magical—if you time it right, it’s one of the most stunning spots in the city.
Best time to shoot: Late afternoon for golden hour
Permit required: Not usually, but check for events
This is a hidden gem for families who want something a bit different. Yates Mill has rustic charm with its historic mill, boardwalk trails, and reflective pond. The textures and scenery give the photos a warm, timeless feel—especially in the fall when the leaves start to turn.
Best time to shoot: Morning or early evening

If you’re hoping to combine your session with a little family fun, Pullen Park is a great option. The park has charming bridges, colorful play areas, and even a carousel. It’s a great way to keep kids engaged and smiling during a shoot—and we all know genuine smiles make for the best photos.
Best time to shoot: Weekdays, early morning or golden hour to avoid crowds
Permit required: No
For peaceful lakeside vibes, Harris Lake in New Hill is a beautiful and less crowded option. The wooded trails, long boardwalk, and calm water offer a serene atmosphere that’s perfect for relaxed, candid family moments. Bonus: it’s a great spot for mini-hikes before or after your session!
Best time to shoot: Mid to late afternoon
Permit required: No
This smaller, lesser-known park has a lot to offer—brick paths, charming gazebos, and lots of mature trees. It’s often quiet and peaceful, which makes it ideal for families who prefer a more laid-back, private experience.
