As a professional photographer, I get to collaborate with incredible creatives and business owners. Recently, I photographed a super talented hair artist at Studio 557 for a full branding session. The goal? To create a cohesive collection of images that speak not only to her artistry, but also to who she is as a business owner, creator, and professional in the beauty industry.

Branding photography has become ESSENTIAL for beauty artists and small business owners today. Clients don’t just want to see the final hair or makeup look, they want to know the artist behind the brushes and the brand. They want to feel connected, confident, and excited before they ever sit down in the chair. This session was all about capturing that connection and what the artist wants her brand to reflect.
Below, I’m sharing the process behind the shoot, the gear and lighting we used, the intention behind each step, and why branding photos matter so much for makeup artists building a modern, magnetic brand.
Every branding session begins long before the first shutter click.
Before this shoot, we spent time building a visual direction together, everything from style inspiration to colors, mood, props, and wardrobe. For makeup artists, planning and gathering inspiration are especially important. The HMU artist’s brand identity is visual by nature: they work with color, texture, light, and detail every single day. These elements need to shine through in their photos in a way that feels authentic and aligned.
We talked through questions like:

By the time we walked into the studio for her session, we already had a clear roadmap. Creating inspiration together not only saves time during the shoot, it helps the photos reflect the artist’s real personality and professional values!
One of the best parts of this session was the props she brought with her. They weren’t just random items, they were carefully chosen pieces that represent her work and her brand! Tools she uses everyday, business cards, and more props mentioned below.
Some of the props included:
Props are powerful in branding photography because they help tell the story without needing words and help promote detail photos for more content. A potential client scrolling through social media may not read a caption, but they’ll absolutely notice a beautifully styled flat lay of products, an artist holding her tools with confidence, or a detail shot of her workspace that shows professionalism and care.
By incorporating props that were meaningful and visually consistent with her brand, we created images that feel personal and authentic rather than staged.
The studio was a dream: clean, minimal, and full of gorgeous natural light. I always love working with natural light whenever possible, especially for beauty-related businesses. It’s soft, flattering, and true to real-life tones, perfect for highlighting skin texture and makeup details without harsh shadows.
But I also brought my Godox V1 flash to add dimension and control when needed. The combination of natural light and flash allowed us to create a wider variety of looks:
Mixing lighting styles gives branding clients a well-rounded gallery they can use across multiple platforms, websites, social media, print materials, and more.

For this shoot, I used my Nikon Z6ii paired with a 50mm lens, as well as the Godox V1 Flash. This combination is one of my favorites for branding sessions because it allows me to capture both intimate portraits and detailed lifestyle images with minimal distortion.
The Nikon Z6ii is fast, responsive, and captures color beautifully, perfect for a makeup artist where color accuracy is essential.
A branding session for an artist isn’t just about nice photos. It’s about showing the person behind the brand.
We focused on capturing:
These are essential for websites, social media profiles, and professional directories.
Shots of the artist laughing, adjusting products, arranging brushes, images that show personality and warmth.
Detailed photos of brushes, foils, shears, and signature products. These details reinforce credibility and professionalism.
Poses, angles, and styling choices that align with her brand’s vibe, soft and minimal, bold and editorial, warm and friendly, etc.
The result was a gallery full of images that felt cohesive, intentional, and true to her unique style.

Today’s beauty industry is fast, visual, and highly competitive. Clients are not just choosing a makeup artist—they’re choosing an experience. Professional branding photos play a major role in shaping that experience.
Here’s why:
People want to see the face behind the brand. Professional photos help clients feel connected before they even inquire.
Your website and social media are often your first impression. High-quality images show that you invest in your craft and your clients.
Whether your brand is bold, natural, editorial, or glam, images express that instantly.
Potential clients love to see your process, workspace, and products, these details set you apart from other artists.
A unified visual story strengthens your entire brand presence and makes your business instantly recognizable.
From Instagram reels to website banners to printed materials, professional images give you the content you need to market effectively.
Clients book the person, not just the service. Branding photos help them feel like they already know you.
By the end of our session, we had created a full gallery of images that she could use across her website, booking pages, social media, and promotional materials. Every image felt intentional and true to the brand she’s building.
The combination of thoughtful planning, meaningful props, natural and flash lighting, and the versatility of the Nikon Z6ii + 50mm lens helped us create a visual story that reflects not just what she does, but who she is.
Branding photography is more than a photo shoot, it’s an investment in your business identity. For makeup artists, it’s a chance to show clients what sets you apart, what inspires you, and what kind of experience they can expect when they book with you.
And this session was such a beautiful reminder of why I love capturing creatives in their element: every detail, every brushstroke, and every smile tells part of the story.
